npx brightspace-mcp-server setupWho it is for
If you already have a school D2L Brightspace account and want to view grades, assignments, syllabi, and course content on demand in an MCP-capable chat, instead of opening the learning-platform site again and again, this service fits. Official docs say it connects AI to Brightspace to pull that course information on demand.
The school side writes that it can be used with any school, but it gives no school inventory, no exception list, and no note on which faculty features get turned off. You need to confirm yourself that the school login page opens and that the account can enter courses.
Official docs name Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT Desktop, and Windsurf. If your environment is not on that list, the source gives no other attach steps. Do not invent client config yourself.
It does not fit people who need to submit assignments, post, or change any platform data in Brightspace. Official docs say this is a read-only service. It will not submit, publish, or change any content.
First try in 3 minutes
Prerequisites: this machine has an environment that can run npx, and you can open your school’s real Brightspace login page. Username and password go only into the school login page, nowhere else. After completion they are stored on this machine in ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.json, readable only by the current user (mode 0600).
Use only this official install path. In a terminal run:
npx brightspace-mcp-server setup
The config location is the local file ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.json written by this setup command. For the first try, run this official command as-is. Do not switch to an installer that was never written, and do not invent tool names that were never written to try reading grades.
Success: setup finishes normally, ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.json appears on this machine, and permissions are readable by the current user. After that the service stays read-only per official docs. It will not submit or change anything in Brightspace for you.
Use cases
Case 1: view grades on demand. Official capability is pulling grades on demand after connecting to Brightspace. Visible docs only write “pull grades.” They give no tool name, parameters, or return fields. What you can confirm: this is a read-only read. On success you should see grade-related information, and nothing is submitted or changed on the platform. If the current client does not show a grade-related call, stop at the written capability boundary.
Case 2: view assignments, syllabi, and course content on demand. The same official sentence lists assignments, syllabi, and course content as information that can be pulled on demand. Again there is no tool name, filter, or output sample. Keep questions inside these read-only materials. On success you can read the matching course information. On failure you can only say official docs have not given a finer call format. Do not invent parameters.
Limits
This is a read-only service. It will not submit, post, or change any content in Brightspace. Read-only is not zero risk: this machine still stores the school account, and the client still reads course data over the network.
Credentials stay only in ~/.brightspace-mcp/config.json on this machine, permissions 0600. Login information goes only into the school’s real login page. Official docs do not write an undo step after deleting that file, and they do not write concrete tool names or parameters. Besides setup, do not invent a second install command.
