uvx --from charted[mcp] charted-mcpWho it's for
You want an agent to emit SVG or PNG charts and do not want to add charted to project dependencies first. The official MCP path uses uvx to start charted with the MCP extra in a one-shot environment and serves it over stdio. The core library has zero runtime dependencies; PNG export and MCP are optional extras that bring their own dependencies, while the base stays pure Python.
It fits asking which chart types and themes exist before you decide to generate. Official text states 15 chart types. Do not take the unexpanded pip install notes on the first try.

First try in 3 minutes
Use only this uvx command:
uvx --from charted[mcp] charted-mcp
Claude Code registration is:
claude mcp add charted -- uvx --from charted[mcp] charted-mcp
Cursor, Cline, and other clients put the same command into their MCP config. Do not also install an in-project virtual environment as the main path.
Prerequisite: uvx is on this machine. uvx pulls charted’s MCP extra into a one-shot environment.
Where to configure: Claude Code uses the add line above; other clients put the same uvx command in MCP server config and start over stdio.
Low-risk first step: call list_chart_types to return chart types. Or call list_themes to return themes. Both are inventories and write no files. Success signal is a returned set of types or themes. Do not read that inventory as offline: uvx still fetches the package and starts a local process.
If the returned set looks normal, then consider drawing. create_chart generates a chart; chart_from_csv draws from CSV. Drawing produces SVG or PNG on the agent side and is not read-only. Before calling, confirm the data may go into this one-shot environment; after calling, getting a chart is the success signal. Official text does not write an on-disk output path and has no undo command.
Use cases
Case 1: see which types are supported. Call list_chart_types. Call list_themes when you need themes. Official text only gives the tool names; it does not enumerate a roster of the 15 types.
Case 2: draw from structured data or CSV. Call create_chart to generate a chart, or chart_from_csv to generate from CSV. Output can be SVG or PNG. PNG, like MCP, is an opt-in extra. Official text does not give field names, theme names, or CSV column conventions.
Limits
The main path is uvx --from charted[mcp] charted-mcp; do not treat a pip path as the first try. Zero-dependency core does not mean a zero-dependency MCP extra. This page only names create_chart, list_chart_types, list_themes, chart_from_csv. Drawing has side effects. readOnlyHint is not zero risk. Official text also mentions a Claude skill, but these excerpts do not write skill install steps.
