Install
/plugin install fabric-skills@fabric-collectionWho it's for
For people who want a coding assistant to understand Microsoft Fabric workloads, APIs, query patterns, and operations practice. The official repository is https://github.com/microsoft/skills-for-fabric It states these are reusable AI assistant instructions. The main package is fabric-skills; Power BI report authoring is packaged separately. The old persona packages fabric-authoring, fabric-consumption, and fabric-operations are retired and exist only as deprecated aliases pointing at fabric-skills. New installs should use fabric-skills.
Most Fabric operations require Azure authentication. If you are not signed in and cannot get a token for https://api.fabric.microsoft.com do not make the first try a change to a production workspace. The materials do not expand “compatible AI coding tools” into a product list.
First try in 3 minutes
The main path adds the marketplace first, then installs the main package:
/plugin marketplace add microsoft/skills-for-fabric
/plugin install fabric-skills@fabric-collection
Preconditions: the current agent UI can run /plugin commands, and you intend to write the plugin into this environment. The materials do not name other installers. Side effect: fabric-skills is installed. After running, first confirm the plugin name is fabric-skills@fabric-collection; do not install the three retired persona ids.
Low-risk task: do an identity check only; do not call Fabric operations that change resources. First:
az login
az account get-access-token --resource https://api.fabric.microsoft.com
az login opens a sign-in flow; confirm it is your own Azure account before you run it. Stop once the token is obtained. Success signal: the main package is installed, and get-access-token returns a token for https://api.fabric.microsoft.com Do not publish a report, change a workspace, or install the Power BI package at this step. If a command asks for a secret file that does not appear in the materials, stop immediately.
Use cases
Case 1: Install the main package and finish an Azure token check. Maps to fabric-skills@fabric-collection and Most Fabric operations require Azure authentication. Fits people who have not yet confirmed that sign-in works. The materials do not describe tenant, capacity, or workspace selection; what you can confirm is: sign in first, then get a token for the Fabric API. Do not write case 1 as if a workspace was already changed.
Case 2: Install the separate package only when you need Power BI report authoring. Maps to /plugin install powerbi-authoring@fabric-collection, covering semantic models, Power BI report skills, and PBIP workflows. Fits people who already have the main package and truly need report authoring. The materials do not describe PBIP directory layout or publish targets; what you can confirm is that this path is separate from the main package. Do not cross into publishing on the first try.
Usage limits
New installs should not use fabric-authoring, fabric-consumption, or fabric-operations again; they are aliases only, and existing installs can keep working with /plugin update. Power BI authoring is not part of the main package; do not assume installing fabric-skills gives you report skills. The token resource is https://api.fabric.microsoft.com The materials do not name another resource. Do not invent install commands that do not appear. Also do not infer exclusive client lock-in from “compatible tools”.
