Install
npx skills add humanlayer/skills --skill improve-claude-mdWho it is for
Use this repository when you already use Claude Code and want HumanLayer skills to change project instructions or add a runnable agent loop. Official page:
https://github.com/humanlayer/skills
Project page:
https://humanlayer.dev/
Prerequisite: Claude Code is already on your machine. The notes do not write other clients as a supported surface; do not extend that yourself.
The main install path is evidenced only to one named command: install improve-claude-md. The generic wording shows a skill-name placeholder that is not given; do not copy the placeholder name, and do not invent other --skill arguments. The notes do not write the on-disk directory.
First try in 3 minutes
Recommended install (writes skill files locally; check the repository name and skill name first):
npx skills add humanlayer/skills --skill improve-claude-md
If the command fails, stop. After success, run /improve-claude-md in the project. It rewrites CLAUDE.md with <important if> blocks, which is a file change. First ask the assistant to show how it will rewrite and which paragraphs it will touch; allow the write only after you confirm.
Success signal: the assistant chose this skill, can explain how <important if> improves instruction following, and has not overwritten CLAUDE.md before you confirm. If it starts changing other files, stop it.
The notes do not write key steps or extra account steps.
Usage examples
Example 1: Rewrite CLAUDE.md. Install as above and call /improve-claude-md. The goal is to raise instruction following with <important if> blocks. The first time, preview only in a project that already has CLAUDE.md; if that file is missing, stop. Do not invent an empty template and overwrite.
Example 2: Narrow React component props. The notes say: narrow component prop types to real code paths, not Storybook, tests, or mock-only states. The first time, have the assistant point out which types are too wide, then change type files after you confirm. The notes give no install command or slash command for this ability; do not invent a skill name for --skill.
Limits
The main path is written only as:
npx skills add humanlayer/skills --skill improve-claude-md
The trigger is evidenced only to /improve-claude-md. Do not use a skill-name placeholder that was never given.
It also writes: building skills inside the repository; a coding-agent GitHub Actions workflow with iteration, plus prompt, memory files, and reference templates; and designing sensor, controller, actuator, and disturbances through Q&A, then turning them into locally runnable components plus a timed workflow. None of these have an install command or slash command; do not do them the first time.
The notes do not write billing, language scope, or the on-disk directory. The first time, only preview the CLAUDE.md rewrite; do not jump into GitHub Actions. Items without a basis stay unknown; do not invent operations or skill names.
