About Stakpak

Stakpak is an open-source operations agent that runs on your own machines and keeps applications running through a persistent autopilot process. After installation, stakpak init discovers the stack and creates APPS.md; stakpak up starts autonomous operation, while the terminal interface and status command keep engineers in control. It handles incident recovery, infrastructure cost monitoring, and preventive maintenance for expiring certificates, secrets, deprecated APIs, and end-of-life runtimes. Safeguards for production use include the Warden network sandbox with Cedar policies, substitution of more than 210 secret types before model calls, local and centralized session audit options, and backups before changes. Teams can bring their own model keys on every plan or use the unified LLM Gateway on paid tiers. Pricing scales by managed applications: an always-free open-source tier is followed by Hacker at $15 per month for 3 apps, Builder at $45 per month for 10 apps, Team at $450 per month for 50 apps, and a custom Enterprise tier for unlimited apps. This fits teams that want an agent operating inside their environment, but adoption includes running a persistent system service, configuring permissions and integrations, and accounting for app limits, included gateway credits, and top-up fees.

Best for

Independent developers who want continuous operations for up to three side-project applications.
Consultants and senior engineers managing multiple client or production applications from their own environment.
Engineering and platform teams that need shared credits, centralized billing, team memory, SSO, and support.

Best use cases

A health check fails overnight, prompting investigation, service recovery, validation, and a channel summary.

A daily infrastructure scan identifies idle cloud resources and turns them into a quantified savings report.

A certificate, secret, API, or runtime approaches expiry or end of life and is handled before disruption.

Compare before choosing

Unlike a conventional coding agent, Stakpak is positioned for ongoing production operations and incident response.

Unlike a hosted PaaS workflow, its open-source binary runs on machines controlled by the adopting team.

The free tier relies on user-supplied keys or local models, while paid tiers add a unified gateway, included credits, and application limits.

Features

Automatic incident recovery

Run continuous health checks, investigate failures, restart affected services, confirm recovery, and report the result to a messaging channel.

Cloud cost watchdog

Scan for idle infrastructure such as unused RDS instances and orphaned EBS volumes, then compile a concrete savings report.

Preventive maintenance

Track expiring TLS certificates, secrets, deprecated APIs, and end-of-life runtimes so corrective work can happen before an outage.

Pros

  • Runs on infrastructure you control and is open source under the Apache 2.0 license.
  • Automates concrete production work including recovery, cost scans, and preventive maintenance.
  • Supports user-supplied model keys on every tier, reducing dependence on the bundled gateway.

Cons

  • Requires installation and operation of a persistent system service on your own machines.
  • Paid tiers cap managed applications and charge $5 per extra app on Builder and Team.
  • Gateway credit top-ups carry fees of 10% on Hacker and Team and 7% on Builder.
