Install
To use the Bitcoin MCP server with Claude Desktop (Anthropic's desktop app for Claude), follow these steps:
1. **Download and Install Claude Desktop:** Visit the official Claude Desktop downloads pageWho it's for
This is for people who need an assistant to verify Bitcoin addresses, interpret transactions, and turn Lightning Network invoices into readable information. The official description presents it as an MCP server that lets AI models interact with Bitcoin and Lightning Network. The main path for a first try is Claude Desktop: install the desktop app first, then add the Bitcoin MCP server to its configuration file.
The safer approach is to finish installing and configuring Claude Desktop first, then perform checks that cost nothing and do not generate private keys. The official page specifically names Address Validation (checking whether a Bitcoin address is correct) and Invoice Decoding (parsing a BOLT11 invoice and displaying human-readable information). The page does not provide tool function names or parameter names, so do not turn capability headings into invented executable calls.
Do not start with Key Generation or Payment. Key Generation produces an address, a public key, and a private key (WIF); Payment pays a Lightning invoice directly from your LNBits wallet. Both have irreversible consequences, so do not use them for a first attempt.
The official page also lists Goose Integration, using STDIO (Local Extension) or SSE (Remote Extension). Do not add clients that are not named on the page beyond Claude Desktop and Goose.
Complete the first attempt in 3 minutes
Prerequisite: you must be able to install Claude Desktop. The official steps begin here: Visit the official Claude Desktop downloads page. The page does not provide a download URL, so do not invent one. After installation, follow the official instructions to add the Bitcoin MCP server to Claude Desktop's configuration file.
For the first attempt, follow only this official installation and configuration path. Do not pretend that “verify an address” or “decode an invoice” is a tool call—the official page does not provide a function name.
To use the Bitcoin MCP server with Claude Desktop (Anthropic's desktop app for Claude), follow these steps:
Success signal: the Bitcoin MCP server appears as added in Claude Desktop, rather than a configuration error. If you see only download instructions and no configuration snippet, stop at “the application is installed and ready to continue with the official configuration steps, which are not expanded here”; do not invent JSON or an npx installer.
Goose appears on the same page only in a directory link, with no goose command provided. Do not switch to Goose for a first attempt.
Use cases
Case one: verify that a Bitcoin address was entered correctly. Use the official capability Address Validation: Validate the correctness of a Bitcoin address. This is a read-only check. The success signal is a response stating whether the address is correct. The official page provides no function name or fields; if they are missing, do not invent arguments—understand it only as “verify the address's correctness.”
Case two: understand a Lightning invoice. Use Invoice Decoding: Parse a BOLT11 Lightning invoice and display human-readable information. First confirm that the invoice is the one you intend to inspect, then decode it. The success signal is seeing readable fields, not completing a payment. Payment (paying directly from an LNBits wallet) is a separate write operation; do not mix it with decoding.
Usage boundaries
Key Generation creates a new Bitcoin key pair, including a private key (WIF). This is not read-only: once a private key appears in a conversation or log, it may be copied. Without an offline backup plan, do not generate keys for real funds in an assistant.
Payment pays a Lightning invoice directly from your LNBits wallet, transferring funds out. Before operating it, you must complete Invoice Decoding and confirm the amount and recipient in person. The official page does not describe an undo path.
The page provides neither a copyable package-manager installation command nor tool function names. Do not add npm, npx, or function names yourself. Claude Desktop is the main path; Goose's STDIO / SSE appears only in a directory heading, without an expanded command.
Being able to query the blockchain, decode transactions, or generate keys does not mean zero risk: the assistant will handle addresses, invoices, private keys, and a wallet. Do not interpret “verify an address” as meaning that no network or privacy boundary is involved.
