Claude Code's New Rule Bans Game Cloning, Unlikely to Stop AI Copycat Wave

Around October 27, Anthropic added a rule to Claude Code's prompts (v2.1.314, released October 30) requiring the model to create original or genre games rather than remakes of specific existing games. Engineer Addy Osmani said this was to avoid IP infringement, but GitHub feedback noted it also blocks legitimate development. Analysts believe users can simply switch to other models, making it hard to curb the wave of AI game cloning.

OpenAI said in an October 30 post that the American Foundation for the Blind, the Association of Research Libraries, Authors Alliance, the U.S. government and others filed amicus briefs in The New York Times lawsuit, supporting the application of fair use principles to AI training. The U.S. government's brief argued that The New York Times' attempt to narrow fair use would harm progress in science and the arts. Independent creators also said they rely on AI tools to make a living.
