About Flare

Flare is an agentic coding IDE centered on a graph, available as a desktop app or as a browser service from the machine running the agent. Its main interface is a live graph of the codebase: files are nodes and imports are edges, with a full terminal below for running claude, codex, or opencode. The graph updates live as the agent edits files, and each batch of changes is snapshotted to local shadow history for file-level or whole-tree diff and rollback. The built-in MCP server provides a shared localhost endpoint for the whole machine and can be used by multiple windows. It is open source under the MIT license, with packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Best for

Developers using claude, codex, or opencode
Engineers who want to inspect codebases and dependency structures in a graph view
Developers who need to compare and roll back AI coding changes
Individual developers who prefer local open-source tools

Best use cases

View file and dependency changes in a live graph while an agent edits code

Diff agent-generated changes by file or across the tree, and roll back to an earlier snapshot

Connect claude, codex, or opencode on the local machine to Flare through the MCP endpoint

Access Flare from a browser while it runs on the machine hosting the agent

Features

Real-time code graph

Each file is a node and each import is an edge; the graph updates live as the agent edits files.

Agent terminal

A full terminal below the graph can run claude, codex, or opencode directly.

Shadow history diff and rollback

Each batch of changes is snapshotted to local shadow history and can be diffed and rolled back by file or across the whole directory tree.

MCP server

A shared localhost endpoint is provided for the whole machine, so multiple Flare windows can use it together.

Pros

  • Open source under the MIT license
  • Packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Supports both desktop and browser use

Cons

  • The macOS installer is ad-hoc signed and not notarized, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch; right-click Open or clear the quarantine flag
  • The Apple silicon (arm64) package is built and signed, but has never run in practice because the project hardware is Intel; the macOS package is marked Beta

FAQ

Official packages are provided for Windows (NSIS installer or zip), macOS (Apple silicon and Intel dmg, both Beta), and Linux (AppImage, deb, tar.gz).
The installer is ad-hoc signed and not notarized, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch; right-click and choose Open, or clear the quarantine flag before launching.
