Elicit
An AI research assistant for literature search, cited reports, systematic reviews, data extraction, and alerts.
About Elicit
Elicit is an AI research assistant built around scientific literature. It searches more than 138 million academic papers and 545,000 clinical trials, helping researchers find relevant work, summarize results, chat with papers that have full-text access, and trace answers back to their sources. A research question can become a structured report with sentence-level citations. For deeper evidence synthesis, the systematic-review workflow supports screening and structured data extraction. Elicit also includes a reference library with Zotero import, deduplication, collections, and research alerts for newly published studies. Basic is a practical free entry point for exploration. Systematic reviews, larger extraction jobs, collaboration, administration, and API access require paid plans. The workflow can save substantial review time, but researchers remain responsible for checking AI summaries and extracted data against the cited papers.
Best for
Best use cases
A new research question needs a broad semantic search before the team narrows its screening criteria.
A systematic review requires thousands of papers to be screened and study variables extracted into tables.
An ongoing project needs alerts when newly published studies match a saved research topic.
Compare before choosing
Compared with keyword-only databases, semantic search reduces dependence on knowing every exact search term.
Compared with a standalone reference manager, Elicit adds AI summaries, cited reports, extraction, and research alerts.
Compared with manual review alone, Elicit accelerates screening and extraction but still requires expert verification.
Features
Literature discovery
Run semantic searches across academic papers and clinical trials, then review relevance and citation context.
Evidence synthesis
Generate cited research reports or use a structured workflow to screen papers and extract study data.
Research monitoring
Save personalized alerts to track newly published papers that match an ongoing research question.
Pros
- The free Basic tier includes unlimited paper search, summaries, and chat with full-text papers.
- Semantic search, cited reports, screening, extraction, library tools, and alerts share one research workflow.
- Paid tiers scale from individual systematic reviews to team collaboration, administration, and enterprise controls.
Cons
- Pro costs $49 per user each month on annual billing, which can be substantial for occasional review work.
- Systematic-review screening limits vary sharply by plan: 5,000 papers on Pro versus 40,000 on Enterprise.
- AI summaries and extracted study data still need expert verification against the cited source papers.
